Huffman Sanitation Crewneck Sweatshirt

Huffman Sanitation Service was a fixture in Lewisville, North Carolina, and the greater Forsyth County area from 1959 to 1990. Founded in March 1959 by Robert A. Huffman, the company began with Saturday garbage pickups in the Vienna area, at a time when refuse had gone uncollected for weeks. Rob worked second shift for the city, rising early each day to run routes, unload at the landfill, and head straight back to work—grinding for years until the business could stand on its own.

As demand grew through the 1960s, neighborhoods in Clemmons, including Arbor Acres and Arbor Run, petitioned for service. Incorporated as Huffman Sanitation, Inc., the company operated under a Forsyth County franchise and expanded to a fleet of five trucks, including an early Dodge Rob kept as a reminder of the company’s humble beginnings. 

Jimmy Huffman later purchased and took over operations, modernizing the fleet while maintaining the company’s hands-on, community-first approach. The business remained family-run, with Myra Huffman and longtime office manager Elva Jennings Schuyler Griffin helping keep daily operations moving behind the scenes.  He operated the business until 1990, when it was sold to Waste Management, marking the close of a three-decade family business. Though refuse collection later consolidated under larger contractors, Huffman Sanitation remains remembered as a symbol of grit, reliability, and small-town work ethic—when a name on a truck meant trust, earned one route at a time.
